It's Steve Ditko's birthday today but sadly like so many of my artistic heroes he's moved on to that unknown territory. But his artwork is still burned into our memories and seared into our imaginations. Here are some prime examples of Ditko heroes from many years and many publishers. Enjoy!
Rip Off
Let's not mention his loony right-wing opinions.
ReplyDeleteInteresting fact: my father (who died in 1999) was only three weeks older than Ditko.
He had developed such a command of the medium in the first decade; it may have had something to do with following closely the work of Eisner and Meskin, and being taught by Jerry Robinson. Ditko had a unique visual and design sense, but employed it in the service of incredibly well-planned stories. It was mastery (and balance) of both sides of his brain that made for some wonderful comics. He was just the best.
