Long Live The King!

And that's that. All year the Dojo has celebrated the career of the mighty "King of Comics", the awesome, the one and only Jack Kirby. I hope you've enjoyed it. I close out my year-long look at Kirby's career with this gallery of some of my favorite Kirby covers. We start with my all-time favorite cover above, the debut issue of New Gods. Next year, while I'll be attending to other matters and other creators, don't expect all sign of the King to disappear. He's too important to the fabric of the hobby to ever be ignored. But I do long to spend some time on other things, and am eager to get to things not quite so Kirby-riffically cosmic. It's been a bitter year in many respects (more on that tomorrow) but the daily doses of Kirby have been a wonderful balm in a time of profound grief.  Ever onward, to the future, that was the Kirby way. The "King" is alas dead, but long live the "King"!

  1. Thanks for the fantastic year you've given us in spite of your trials; coming here has been a balm for many of us these days. For comics fans, celebrating the King is a celebration of hope. Your loving retrospectives have had me shaking my head and saying to myself, "What an amazing guy. And Kirby was pretty amazing, as well."

    1. I grok that -- Kirby's core message was one of hope from a man who came up in the tenements and who slogged in the mud of WWII, a blue-collar guy who worked for a living.

  2. Rip: Kirby's art and your commentary helped get me through 2017. I am grateful for your continued curation and insight, especially during your unfathomably difficult year. As I told my Dad one New Year's Eve soon after my mom passed away, "By not being this year, next year has to be better."

  3. On my side of the pond it's just over 10 minutes away from the New Year Bells, Rip. When it arrives on your side (if it hasn't already), I hope you have an absolutely amazing 2018.

    1. You're very welcome. He made it easy to find enough stuff. Actually it hard to fit it all in. I never got around to a proper Thor overview and that was on the list. Maybe 2018 after other things have come and gone.
