King Kong Lives!

King Kong for all his fame is a creature who has appeared in preciously few movies. There's something intimidating about dealing with a creation of this magnitude and not coming out looking worse for wear. Alas the 1986 sequel to 1976's King Kong titled Kong Kong Lives (King Kong 2 in other places) is a remarkably lackluster movie and if anything takes the little charm its predecessor might've spun up and almost completely wastes it.

For one thing it's a somewhat stupid movie, not to mention dull by way of being much too long. (Peter Jackson did not get that lesson for sure.) The story starts with a spark and then just goes into idle as the characters slowly slowly assemble. The gimmick is to allow King Kong to fondle a mate and kindle an heir. That they do, but it takes way damn too much time.

The story begins where the last one ended, with Kong's heart which was beating and then stopped. After a decade in on life support, an enormous artificial heart is manufactured (seriously it looks like a Volkswagen) and scheduled to be put into the mammoth ape, but by that time they need blood, a transfusion. In the nick of time a blonde male explorer finds a female Kong and she is whisked away and the surgery is done. The heart begins to beat and the movie kind of stops.

Kong escapes (he always does) and he and his girlfriend head off to the hills where they hide out for months (no explanation how that happened in these United States) which was long enough for some frisky business. Then Kong is thought killed and then is not and then is and so on and so forth all through the thing. Finally there's a showdown with the Army and he's shot up and the military is flattened. I won't say what happens but let's just say the warranty on that new heart is in no danger of being tested.

  1. Awful movie, but John Scott's musical score is awesome!

    1. I like bits and parts here and there. It's not without merits, but overall it's too long and just boring and I don't like saying that.
