Let me not mince words -- 1969's The Mighty Gorga is a dreadful movie. It features arguably the worst special effects I've ever seen in a professionally produced movie and the acting is at best indifferent. But thanks to the likes of pros such as Anthony Eisley and Scott Brady it's not a total loss. Still and all any interest in this movie is its shout out to its King Kong origins and the so-bad-it's-good production values.
The plot is simple -- a circus owner is on the cusp of losing his whole operation and in a desperate gambit goes to Africa to follow up on a rumor about a giant gorilla. But the guy who tipped him off is missing, but his daughter who is having her own difficulties agrees to go with him to solve the mystery of his disappearance and maybe get the gorilla to boot. The journey is laughable and particularly so when the duo take an outrageous amount of time to climb a tiny rock face. The find a bunch of tired looking natives, and a toy dinosaur. The mighty Gorga does show up, his eyes bugged out permanently as he romps around for little purpose. The original explorer is found but things get even more hairy after that. The plot has an echo The Lost World for certain, especially in regard to its solution.
The movie breaks apart because of the ridiculous effects which are nearly childish in places. I don't blame the actors as they are told to look into space and react, and are not responsible for the director and others putting something stupid to fill the space. I can't really recommend this movie, but maybe you might want to see it since after that you'll really appreciate every other movie you come across.
Rip Off
