Roots Of The Swamp Thing!

The Swamp Thing slogs along still. Despite the loss in the past year of both his creators, the impressive bog monster created in the pages of House of Secrets keeps on keeping on.

Early this year Berni Wrightson passed on and just last month we learned of the demise of Len Wein. These two stellar talents gave the world something when they fashioned a creature out of the muck and moss and set it walking across the comic book pages.

I'm not going to go into much detail as I did a expansive review of the classic only a few years ago. You can follow this link and scroll down to find a review of each of the Wein-Wrightson issues, which have become so famous as well as the few done by Wein in tandem with Nestor Redondo. The duo of Wein and Wrightson managed to create mini-horror classics as the Swamp Thing battles Frankensteinien patchwork men, werewolves, zombies, Lovecraftian demons, and more. Each issue a tight lavish morsel.

DC has recently released an omnibus with all of the original Swamp Thing stories, even those not by Wein and Wrightson. I wish though that they'd put out a second volume of the great trade they published several years ago. The speculative cover might look something like the one show above.  I doubt I'll pop for the omnibus, but you never know for sure. I've bought those Wein-Wrightson gems several times over the decades and I can never rule out popping for them one more time.

This month's look at sundry swamp things is dedicated to the memory of Berni Wrightson and Len Wein, may they rest in peace.
