This is a dandy picture of Captain Kirk and Mr.Spock reading an issue of MAD Magazine.
Here's the issue the two Federation stalwarts are enjoying.
But given the date of the issue in hand (December 1967) and the episode they seem to be filming, I'd be careful of a Gorn attack if I were them. He's liable to do the Jaffee fold-in for real and ruin the issue.

If it was "Arena" they were filming then Leonard Nimoy wouldn't need to be on location. Only Kirk was planetside that episode.
ReplyDeleteWhatever episode it was, I love any shot of a celeb with a Mad magazine.
The date roughly matches the shooting schedule for the second-season ep "Friday's Child" which used the same locale, Vasquez Rocks, as "Arena".
ReplyDelete(Remember, cover dates were 2-3 months ahead of the on-sale dates, so that issue was probably on-sale in September or October 1967.)
Oh,and Spock WAS planetside in "Arena", during the Cestus III ambush (which was also filmed at Vasquez Rocks) along with McCoy and several other Enterprise crew!
ReplyDeleteBut he wasn't on the Metron-modified planetoid with Kirk and the Gorn captain.
BTW, The Cestus III starbase was really a standing Western-movie/tv show fort modified for the Trek shoot. It's also seen in several Wild, Wild West and Bonanza episodes.
Guess I forgot the beginning of the episode. :( Well, you know what they say memory is here today Gorn tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteAnd now I know the...rest of the story. (Kudos to Paul Harvey!) Thanks guys!
ReplyDelete"Arena" is one of my fave Star Trek episodes, not the least because of the Marvel Comics adaptation I got hold of a few years later.

ReplyDeleteDid you ever see the original Outer Limits episode "Fun and Games" that was a direct adaptation of Brown's story?
