Here's what's on my wall this year. On a whim I actually spent dough on a calendar this year, and I picked this one featuring the exquisite artwork of pulp master Virgil Finlay. Here the images which will share my year with me.

Wow. Virgil Finlay was one of the best (if not the best) pulp illustrators. Has no one ever done an art book of his work?
ReplyDeleteReno, there have been several portfolios and books, many fan-produced, over the years. In the 90's Underwood-Miller did a series of trades that are still pretty inexpensive if you find them. Of interest is some of the lush later work Finlay did for astrology magazines and especially the American Weekly when it was edited by Abraham Merritt. Sumptuous, intoxicating stuff.
DeleteSadly, living in the Philippines makes it difficult to hunt for the books you mentioned. I've only managed to get samplings of his work in the book Science Fiction Art by Brian Aldiss, which was given to me as a gift when I was younger. But thanks for the info. Maybe I can have one of my friends in the US hunt them down for me.
DeleteI love it!
