Strange Looks!
It might be nostalgia ruling the day, but I've always been a big fan of the mysterious masked superhero look that Doctor Strange sported briefly during his first self-titled comics run back in the late Silver Age. Gene Colan drew the character magnificently. Here is a poster shot by Colan showing the good Doctor surrounded by many of his friends and enemies of the time. The shocking weird green background really pops.
Here is that same poster art in glorious black and white from a later British reprint.
And finally here is that image in full color, used here as a cover for an issue of the British version of The Avengers. Beautifully rendered.

I had that very issue of Avengers ( natch, got it every week!) and that's my favourite look for Doc Strange. I take it you're aware of the theory that Roy Thomas was inspired by the Golden Age Vision for this design?
ReplyDeleteI was not aware that the new Doc look was based on The Vision. It's easy to see. Roy must've really liked The Vision since he was almost at exactly the same time creating the new android version.

Wait, what issue of the Avengers features Doctor Strange with his mask?
ReplyDeleteThe Avengers issue above is a British comic, but Avengers #61 does indeed feature the new Doc, it's a crossover with Doc's own magazine. To get a glimpse check out the third volume of Essential Avengers. John Buscema drew the new Doc quite effectively.
