Not Quite Kamandi!

Here once again is the iconic cover for the debut issue of Jack Kirby's Kamandi. The image is burned into the minds of many who  first saw it so many decades ago. The image is the kind which inspires imitation. Here are a couple of clever ones.

I know nothing about this comic save for this image which gets my attention instantly, mostly for the homage to Kamandi, but not least for the well-developed heroine. Frankly there's little to recommend this comic save for the clever cover. The online comic is decidedly NSW. Check it out at your peril.

And the always hilarious Fred Hembeck knocks it out of the park with this spin on the classic Kamandi cover, but with a very specific cultural spin. I'd love to read an actual issue of this Hembeckian variation on Kirby's classic concept.

  1. I was frankly surprised there wasn't a little Hembeck detailing on the face of the Statue of Liberty. :D

    1. Excellent point. I didn't catch that, but I bet she has classic Hembeck knees under that gown.

  2. Just a quick FYI in the "credit where it's due" dept....
The Kamandiwitz cover was designed by TV/Film actor JONATHAN MANKUTA, who hired Fred Hembeck to draw out his idea as a commissioned parody piece of art...so Fred basically drew what Mankuta told him to, and Fred did it exactly as described...came out awesome!
