The striped shorts used to annoy me as offbeat for such a character located in the jungle. But as I've gotten used to the look it's the right bit of flair for a very utilitarian look.
I always equated those stripes as being a stylized TIGER stripe on his trunks there...because as an artist...a wannabe/never was in my Kubert school era days...I did a lot of research on the Phantom and Lee Falk. The How and why he wore those stripes became more evident and clear. It made sense.
positively the best costume design in the history of comics , super heroes and costumed adventurers! I love looking at the character...great visually
