No Green Backgrounds!
One of my favorite blog reads these days are the reminiscences of "Big" Jim Shooter about his early days taking over as Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Comics.
The latest installment discusses several topics but also tells the tale of some unspoken and/or misunderstood Stan Lee edict never to color a comic book cover background green. This smacks as totally true to me as others have told stories of how an off-hand comment by Stan could wreak havoc in the production of comics. (Iron Man's nose sound familiar to anyone?)
You have to feel sympathy for poor George Roussos in this one folks.
I think the Master of Kung-Fu cover by Mike Zeck above must be the one in dispute.
For this behind-the-scenes narrative of Marvel's Bronze Age (and others) check out Shooter's blog.

While I only check in occasionally (usually when prompted like this), I do enjoy having access to these stories, as well as John Byrne's recollections...
ReplyDeleteTwo sides of a coin for sure there amigo.

After hearing so many comics creators bashing Jim Shooter, it's fascinating to read his side of the story. And that "no green backgrounds" story is hilarious...
