The hourglass is an antique but dramatic way to showcase the concept of time, and it's been used on many a comic book cover over the years to do just that. Here's a sampling.
Roy Thomas used the idea many times based on his adoration for the old Justice Society comic which used the notion.
Others have used the notion too.
Walt Simonson once used the hourglass as a motif on four really intriguing Hulk covers.
The MARVEL SUPER ACTION cover had actually been the second interior splash page in AVENGERS ANNUAL #2. When the double-length story was 'broken' into two parts for reprinting, the splash was used as the cover for the second part of the story.
Thanks for the background. That second annual for the Assemblers is a big fave of mine. It's got the Marvel magic all over it, as well as a heady dash of what made DC fun too.
Mine too. The idea of the original team at their mightiest (with both the Hulk and Hank Pym's Giant-Man incarnation) versus a team with three normal-level (but skilled) humans...who still WIN...was one of my childhood faves as well!
