Savage Wildey!

This suspenseful moment for Clark "Doc" Savage Jr. is brought to you by master craftsman Doug Wildey. Famous for his work on many a fine comic book especially Westerns, the creator of Jonny Quest offered up this image for the cover of the second issue of Millennium Publications attempt at adapting the Man of Bronze.

Here's a look at the cover as it appeared on the stands. Wildey's Doc was definitely a throwback image, more in keeping with Walter Baumhofer's original pulp covers than James Bama's later more iconic imagery for the character. The Millenium comic books stuck to the Bama model the rest of the time. But we did get this gem with its distinctly Western flavor.

  1. Ain't it amazing how much Doc looks like Race Bannon? ;-)

    1. Ain't that the truth. I always wondered about Race's short white hair which to my eye always put me in mind of Doc. It's apparently based on Jeff Chandler, but I see Doc who was apparently based on Clark Gable, at least the Baumhoffer version.
