When Kirby ditched Marvel and blasted over to DC Comics he debuted an avalanche of new characters and concepts. Chief among those were the Forever People. Here we see four of the five youngsters who comprised that kid team from "Supertown". They are Big Bear, Vykin the Black, Serifan, and Mark Moonrider. I was somewhat cool to the Forever People at the time, being more attracted to the hyper dramatic Orion and Mister Miracle, but I've learned to really appreciate Kirby's super hippies over time.
And here is the beautiful fifth member of the Forever People, Beautiful Dreamer seemed to be possessed of a special secret which the loathsome Darkseid seemed to have a keen interest in. He claimed to have only an interest in her mind, but maybe his special attentions were the result of an all too obvious motivation. Nah! He's Darkseid.
Now in a shout out to the classic Captain Marvel and his youthful alter-ego Billy Batson, when the Forever People all placed hands on their beloved Mother Box in just the right way and said the word "Tarru" (or "Taruu" dependng on the issue) they all vanished, and in their place appeared The Infinity Man. He was one of Kirby's most enigmatic creations of the Fourth World, and maybe if there had been more time and more issues, we'd have learned the connection between the Forever People and this mysterious entity.
It was first seen in the pages of The Kirby Portfolio, produced and available while Kirby was just getting started at DC Comics the third time around.
The image has been used a few times, two most recently as cover art. Here we see it as the cover for both the recent IDW Artist Edition of The Forever People and as the cover of The Jack Kirby Collector's "Alpha" issue from some years ago. Both are still available to the adept Kirby fan.
Rip Off
There can be no doubt about it - I must be a pervert. Why? That pin-up of Beautiful Dreamer still rings my bell.
ReplyDeleteIt's a humdinger for sure.
