Here is another of those offbeat "new" Jack Kirby covers Marvel is concocting during this centennial year. This one is for the debut of a yet another X-Men title. (I woefully miss those halcyon days when there was only one and it was awesome.)
The artwork is by Jack Kirby and inker Paul Reinman for the splash page of The X-Men #2, the one which pitted the teen-age mutants against the oddly potent Vanisher.
I always rather liked the Vanisher but never really figured out why he was dressed like a snake. Does anyone know?

Perhaps to suggest just how 'slippery' he was, as he vanished before anyone could catch him. Besides, all crooks are 'snakes', aren't they?
ReplyDeleteThat's true. I guess I just thought since they'd already created the Cobra in Thor, another snake villain was redundant or something like that. A little research tells me that the Vanisher and the Cobra debuted the same month so maybe that was it.

Maybe the Vanisher's costume was a rejected design for the Cobra?
DeleteNote that when the story was reprinted, the Vanisher was recolored as his later, green version!
