Judomaster Jubilee!
Here is a delightful drawing of Judomaster and Tiger (along with the Smiling Skull and Blue Beetle as well) by Frank McLaughlin, the creator of the "Scarlet Smasher". He produced this gem for the Charlton Neo folks. It was printed in The Charlton Arrow #2 from last year, if you want to see the rest of it. (Look for a formal review of it right here soon.)
Frank is clearly drawing inspiration from two of his most powerful covers for the late 60's run of the potent Judomaster comic book.
On this sixth anniversary of the Dojo, let me take a moment to shout out to Frank for all the great comics pages he's produced and for inspiring this place with his two-fisted World War II creation. As the next year looms, things will continue apace. I'd thought a year ago I might be backing off posting, but that's not been the case, as (apart from technical problems) there has been at least one new post each day. That will hopefully be case going forward. Thanks to all the folks who take a few minutes to check the Dojo out and those who spare a few more to comment. It's much appreciated, believe me.
Here's some more great McLaughlin work for Charlton Neo, these images paying homage to some of the greatest panels by Steve Dikto and Alex Toth even.
And while I am celebrating the craftsmanship of Frank McLaughlin, here is a gem of an image from 1987. Judomaster seems contented in this scene alongside Dick Giordano's Sarge Steel. The duo are part of a panorama of DC superstars from many original sources as can be seen in the fantastic poster below.
That's a keeper amigos! I'm lucky to have a reprint of this mighty image in The DC Vault: A Museum-A-Book which came a few years back. There's a true who's who of industry giants (both fictional and real) in this delightful image.
For now and until next time...

Has it been another year already? Thanks so much for taking the time to post something each day
ReplyDeleteYou're very welcome. And they anniversary things do seem to come up quicker than I expect. Sigh.

Yes, your daily Herculean efforts here at Rip Jagger’s Dojo are so much appreciated by this humble silver/bronze ager. (Now if you could just get Tiger to sweep up those cigarette butts around the compound entrance...) Completely unrelated (or maybe not) - I just picked up a slightly chewed-on copy of Charlton’s Hercules # 3 from 1967 in the bin at Half Price Books…Sam Glanzman! Jim Aparo! And even a letter from a kid named Klaus Janson inside…Life is good!
ReplyDeleteAll those Glanzman Hercules are sweet sweet comics, much underrated gems in comics lore. Enjoy!
DeleteAs for Tiger, it turns out he's rather a villain. Who knew?
