Both Batman and Superman look pretty uncomfortable in these dramatic cutaway scenes.Confined and hammering away in seeming vain, it's pretty grisly pair of covers. I'm sure Edgar Allan Poe would agree.
Aw, Rip! You MISSED a poifect cover! World's Finest #195 had Jimmy Olsen and Robin digging their own graves while Superman and Batman watched over their sidekicks! ;)
What the heck is going on with the wardrobe choices on that Jimmy Olsen cover by Adams? I gather from the architecture that's meant to be someplace like Switzerland or Bavaria or Austria, and we get and man and a boy in lederhosen, a Tyrolean hat, other men in business suits, and a woman in a space princess outfit. It's all over the map, in the figurative as well as literal sense.
Fashion and Jimmy Olsen are a vibrant subject. This one is a hodge podge. He himself wears some truly regrettable things. The smartest move Kirby made was putting him in a green jumpsuit for most of his run.
I didn't get a lot of World's Finest comics, but I remember getting that one, and being impressed with how Batman got himself out of that coffin. He's a very flexible dude!

ReplyDeleteThat is a sweet cover, but doesn't show them entombed. It does inspire for another thematic link on covers to be seen soon. Thanks!

The Superman one was recently featured as a weekly banner at the GSBAMB

Is that where you got the idea for a post?
Yep. I remembered that Jimmy cover when I chanced across the World's Finest cover.

ReplyDeleteThere's nothing the Batman can't do. He's the best there is at what he does...oh wait that's another grim guy.
