This summer of Olympic action seems an auspicious time to celebrate comics own "Team America". This gang of motorcycle heroes flashed onto the scene in the early 80's when Marvel was just beginning its decades-long hegemony of the newsstands.
According to this CBR article the team began when an Evel Kneivel projected comic fell through because of his run ins with the law.
The toy line was altered and a new different comic book was invented.
Also it seems the concept owed more than a smidge to Jack Kirby's Forever People, not a connection I grasped at the time. I do remember enjoying this frothy comic.
