The 1955 Dell Comics Tarzan cover above (the artist is debated) reaches back to the pulps and 1939 for its inspiration.
This Doc Savage Magazine cover by Emery Clarke is clearly the inspiration for the later Tarzan image. Doc in this story acts a lot like ERB's classic Apeman by taking to the trees in South America.
This connection was pointed out by Will Murray in his essay alongside the reprint of this Doc Savage story in the Sanctum Books series.
