Alex Toth was one of the finest talents ever to grace a comic book page. His skill and craftsmanship is on display in every line of every panel of every page he carefully composed to spin yarns full of insight, character and even at moments horror. These tales are on full display in Creepy Presents Alex Toth from Dark Horse. I was a bit slow to gather this one in, and I regret it mightily. This is arguably the best of the solo collections from Dark Horse (wish they do more, such as one for Reed Crandall for instance), equaled in my eyes by the Steve Ditko tome. But this one has greater breadth than that former collection, showcasing stories from a long span of Toth's later career.
A number of these stories were written, or perhaps composed by Toth would be a better term, and so we get the full range of his immense talent. Alex Toth was an infamous curmudgeon, a man full of emotions, but he was also one of the great masters of comic book storytelling and those skills fill up the pages of this slim volume. If you want stories which take the fullest advantage of the black and white comic book page, this is the one to look at -- a masterpiece.

Just bought this last weekend. Highly recommended.
ReplyDeleteI, too, wish for more collections like, as you mentioned, Reed Crandall. An Angelo Torres one would be great, too.
I wanted more of the Eerie counter-heroes too. El Cid was dandy and Hunter was fantastic, Rook was wonderful, but there are some more.
