Arguably the the comic book sword and sorcery character in need of a trade collection (now that Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser have been gathered) is Claw the Unconquered by David Michelinie and Ernie Chan.
I've not read much Claw the Unconquered. As the series appeared on the stands, I only ever picked up one issue (number nine) and by that time an up and coming Keith Giffen had taken the series on. The series ran a respectable twelve issues before giving up the ghost and a thirteenth was produced and saw publication in one of the famous Cancelled Comics Cavalcade comics DC put out in the late 70's. Some of the covers by Joe Kubert are pretty dang handsome. And here is a very groovy look at the splash pages from the series.
I'd love to read some Claw. I've seen the back issues and they are not terrible, but I'd much prefer a handsome and easy-to-read trade paperback. Claw has been revived in recent years, even teamed up with Dynamite's Red Sonja, but still no trade of his classic Bronze Age adventures. Come on DC. Do it for the kids.
Here are the Claw covers. Enjoy!

I was only able to find the first two issues back in those days, but they were both very good, if a bit derivative of Conan. The "claw" gimmick was pretty cool though.
ReplyDeleteHe looks more like Conan than anything. The differences were actually pretty strong otherwise based on the few issues I've read, but those were later in the run.

I can't help ya with the tpb collection, but you'll be able to read 'em on my blog soon. Coincidentally (or is it? ;D ) Several series we thought would never get collected into tpb form have or are coming out...after they've made a splash in Groove City! Even Marvel's Tarzan is on it's way, now...hmmm (Yes, my tongue is firmly in my cheek!)
ReplyDeleteYou make my mouth water with the Tarzan news. I didn't know that. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do.

I too would enthusiastically buy a Claw the Unconquered collection…I had like the first & third issues but then had a hard time ever finding it again…Also, I remember being struck that the name “Claw” was close to the Steranko barbarian named “Talon” – though I don’t believe he actually had the disfigured hand like Claw…It was a free color poster Steranko gave away with ComixScene/MediaScene – but I don’t think this promised S&S character (Talon) ever saw the light of day beyond the poster.
ReplyDeleteClaw was originally promoted as Talon the Untamed before Steranko told them they were infringing on his property.
DeleteNow Talon is a character who deserves to be in at least one story. Has he ever appeared in one. I don't think so.

Number 9 was my first issue too. Then 12 and 13. I wasn't very taken with it, though. I preferred Conan.
