The Coming Of The Avengers!
I bought The Avengers #1 yet again.
This reprint offers up a "remastered" look at the Lee-Kirby-Ayers classic comic. The cover "painting" is by Dean White. The interior pages have a revised color which changes the story without really altering it fundamentally. It's a fresh way to see the tale.
I have the original, and I have most all the reprints of the vintage jewel through the years. My Avengers collection ended with the advent of the "New Avengers" a few years ago, but I still find myself drawn to these reprint packages of the stories which wowed me for decades.
The lovely cover first appeared on this variant of the Masterworks paperback. It's a nice revision of the Kirby-Ayers classic. From the very beginning, The Avengers had something special. It's nice to see at long long last the rest of the wide world has caught on.

I KNOW Alex Ross did his version of Avengers #4.
ReplyDeleteI have the feeling he did Avengers #1, also, but I can't find it...
I've found a few versions by various people. My favorite I saw once and didn't pick up was one featuring Soviet versions of the heroes. I've not been able to find that one on line either.

i DON'T like THOR's face...it's ameteurish...you can definately see that Stan's influence is sorely missed in the eidtorial area at Marvel. He never would have let that slide on a book going to print.
ReplyDeleteNow that you point it out, the face on Thor is odd. But I have to disagree on Stan's editorial control. He sure had his focus, but it's not as if many an oddball item didn't slip through. To be fair to the modern folks (as if I'm inclined to do that ), there is so much material pouring out of that company these days, I'd be surprised if any one person was even that much aware of it all.

You raise a good point.
DeleteYour criticism is still valid though. Someone should be watching the quality control. Sadly, I think what we used to consider "quality" has changed.

The Avengers were my gateway into comics....there was something magical about collecting the back issues....never got the first ones, but I got close. I was first excited when Bendis revived them, but shortly walked away from them for good.
ReplyDeleteNever got into the solo titles growing up....it was the group for me...
