It seems so very long ago now that mankind actually left this globe and set foot on another planet. Since those halcyon days of exploration, we have used technology to look at other places in the cosmos, but we've not yet put our actual toes onto another sphere of any kind. I expected more when I was ten and this news of a man named Neil Armstrong standing on the Moon broke across the world. In celebration of that event (which did take place, so no nagging about it already) I offer up this tiny glimpse of a Will Eisner package titled 101 Outer Space Jokes.
The audacity to go to the Moon is what makes it the utterly fabulous event in human history that it should be celebrated as.
Rip Off
The Russians were the first to launch a satellite into orbit and the first to put a man in space so the US government was desperate to beat Russia to the moon and once that had happened they lost interest.
ReplyDeleteAfter the "space race" the focus seemed to be about making ships that could go back and forth into orbit effectively. I'm not sure now that worked out in the long run, but it soaked up most of the space budget and energy for decades. Meanwhile the Moon and Mars went wanting.
DeleteI love this sort of thing. Are these all by Eisner ( cool astronauts). The moon landing was a seminal event for those of us that were around at the time. I still recall the excitement of it all and watching this with the family and neighbours on our black and white TV in total silence and awe, when they landed the adults stood up and applauded, class . Humans, when they put their minds to it can do wonderful things it's just a pity so few do that now. This was America at it's very best
ReplyDeleteIt was the U.S. doing something big that didn't have to do with war, at least not a hot one.
DeleteThese are a hoot -- more please!
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed the glimpse.
