Logan's Run - The Television Series!

Logan's Run was a television show briefly in late 1977 and ending its brief run in early 1978. The show lasted a mere fifteen episodes. "Logan 5" was played by Gregory Harrison and "Jessica 6" by Heather Menzies with Randy Powell portraying "Francis 7". The latter only appeared in about half the episodes but was quite effective as a man torn between his duty and his friendship. The show begins with the same premise as the movie, using quite a bit of footage for the special effects. In the first half hour of the first episode, we follow Logan and Jessica as they escape from the "City of Domes", but from there it's all new stuff.

In the film the pair found a landscape in which man's landmarks were being slowly overrun by nature. But the world outside in the TV show is surprisingly rich in inhabited locations. One of the first places they find is a city in which only the android servants survive, following their roles thoughtlessly for eternity. There the duo find a new ally named "Rem" played by Randy Moffat. Rem is himself an advanced android, who is able to make choices for himself and chooses to accompany Logan and Jessica in their search for Sancturary. He becomes my favorite character in the show.

The trio use a fairly high-tech hovercraft to bounce around the pretty mundane world finding all kinds of settlements, some quite sophisticated. Weirdly many of these places seem unaware of the others, even though they don't seem to be that far apart. Another departure from the movie is that the City of Domes is ruled by a group of older men and not computers. They give Francis 7 is marching orders and many additional Sandmen to help him try and recapture Logan and Jessica. The story even returns to the City of Domes at one point. The show withered after about half a season and frankly it seemed to be running out of gas even then. So it's best that it ended when it did because the episodes are pretty entertaining, but more would have helped things.

Rip Off

  1. This series was shown in the UK and I watched it which means it must have been my first exposure to Logan's Run because I didn't watch the movie until sometime in the 1980s at least. So when I did finally see the movie it must have been a surprise to discover the city is ruled by a computer rather than a bunch of old men.

By the way, Heather Menzies (Jessica) had played one of the Von Trapp children in the film 'The Sound Of Music'.

    1. I have gone all my long life having never seen more than a few moments of The Sound of Music. I don't plan to rectify that. Sorry Julie!

  2. I never saw the tv show until a couple years ago and while it isn't great there is something appealing about it. Someone traveling from town to town is a well known tv formula so maybe the scifi aspects make it stand out from those for me. It is fluff but with a bit stronger world building it could be an interesting remake.

    1. It was definitely above average for the era. There was a seriousness which didn't always seep into other sci-fi of the time.
