Nice… Thoroughly enjoyed all these OMAC pieces Rip! Just visually speaking, I think OMAC is one of The King’s better-designed later period characters. Really an original look to the character. Hopefully none of this ever gets retconned away by DC…(Have to wonder if the punk rock days of the late-seventies don’t owe a nod to OMAC with that whole mohawk fad that followed…)
Did love that mohawk! It makes him immediately identifiable. By this time he has probably been retconned out and back in a few times. He's a permanent part of the scene for me though regardless.
I love the pencil art. This was one series I never got around to: at the time I thought it was a comedown from earlier work, but anything from this period seems precious now. He was really at an artistic height and I've enjoyed being able to savor this stuff as it's collected.
If you're not aware of it, here's a Flicker set of great Kirby double-page spreads:
When the King passed two decades ago now, it truly changed the way I saw his stuff. Suddenly it all seemed more precious, each piece a treasure. I'd always liked Kirby, but now it seemed that what he gave us for the time he did so was part of an era never to be revived, but one we can revisit over and over again.
I love to do these reports as a way of making me engage the work with a greater attention to the details. It makes me accountable.
