Hogarth Of The Jungle!

This summer Dark Horse is coming out with Tarzan: Burne Hogarth's Lord of the Jungle. This truly lush and often exotic package will reprint two works by Burne Hogarth from the 70's, many years after he had left the comic strip which made his reputation.

The works are labeled "graphic novels", but seem more to be exceedingly detailed and colorful illustrated renditions of the original text which has been abridged. The first volume Tarzan of the Apes from 1972 is in beautiful and perhaps even overwhelming color; the second volume Jungle Tales of Tarzan from 1976 is in beautifully rendered black and white. These are tomes I've been eager to own for many years. It will be nice to add this to my cache of Tarzan plunder.

Below are a few examples of Hogarth's vivid and perhaps even psychedelic pages.

  2. Just wanted to comment.
St John, Foster, Hogarth, Lubbers, Celardo, Manning, Kubert, Buscema, Grell to many too mention.
    Damn, Jesse March SUX Outright
Even Rex Maxon who ERB himself didn't like. Is even better than March.
OK I'll go now. But damn Jesse March is an embarrassment.

    1. Oh I don't know. Marsh's rough lines have a certain charm,but I certainly prefer others.

  3. Those last two illustrations remind me of Jim Steranko for some reason. Anyone else see it?

    1. I totally get what you mean. That tree which Tarzan is standing on looks not unlike the tree in SHIELD #2 in the splash page featuring "Kong".
