Creepy Presents Bernie Wrightson!
The untimely passing of the great Bernie Wrightson was a bit of shock to the community. He is of that generation of talents who launched into the comics on the heels of the old pros who had guided the form for a few decades. When DC decided to put out to pasture a number of their veterans, they were able to do so because of upcoming talents like Wrightson who was young, eager, talented and comparatively cheap. It's sadly the way of business and the business side of the comics game has always been brutal. Wrightson made his bones on the ghost comics of DC and ultimately on Swamp Thing, but also worked for Marvel, Heavy Metal, National Lampoon and others. This collection of some key Warren stories shows just how little actually Wrightson worked for that company, despite the fact he was a perfect fit for the form. Wrightson was always better in black and white and that was of course Warren 's forte.
Of the members of the famous Studio, Wrightson was always the one of them who seemed the most grounded in the classic comic tropes of earlier eras. But he did find common cause with the look of engravers and his masterpiece, his illustrations for Frankenstein showcase this talent to its ultimate effect. Wrightson is missed, but fortunately for us we still have stories like "Jennifer", "The Black Cat", and more to look on and enjoy.
Rip Off
