When Thor and Hercules clashed it was literally a battle of the gods. Jack Kirby was adept at making action fairly explode from the page as seen from this splash from
The Mighty Thor #126. While there is a stiffness in the work here the fact the figures almost don't fit inside the full-page panel makes the scene feel even bigger than it is.
In this black and white version the Vince Colletta inking is evident. It's not his strongest effort by any means and generally I like the overall effect of Colletta on Kirby though I know for certain that's a minority view.

And look at the size of those fists! I've got the Treasury Edition version of this, and they're even bigger there.
ReplyDeleteKirby's stuff translated wonderfully to the Treasury tomes. He was the ideal artist for that format.

I know Colletta is not a fan favorite, and he wasn't my cup of tea on everything that Kirby drew, but he always seemed to work well with the Thor series, and with the Fourth World Series he collaborated on.
ReplyDeletePeople get hung up on Colletta's approach and I think fail to judge the net result. The art has a clean crisp feel which serves the stories quite well. As energetic as other inkers were, as faithful as they were, they didn't get this particular blend.
