Here is a ring full of boxing-themed comic book covers for your viewing pleasure. While the "Sweet Science" has been reduced in our culture to a sideshow, with maybe one boxing match of any significance in any given year (if that) once upon a time boxing was a significant part of the pop culture of our society as evidenced by this wide array of comic book covers. Many have been showcased this month in the regular "Rip's Favorite Cover" section, but almost as many are new, adding up to a full fifty plus boxing covers. Enjoy and remember to keep your hands up and protect yourself at all times.

That was a lot of covers. I've also noticed how boxing is hardly mentioned now - gone are the days when everybody knew who the World heavyweight champion was. I haven't a clue who the current holder is nor do I care to be honest. The decline of boxing is no great loss - is watching two men beat each other senseless really a sport anyway ?
ReplyDeleteBoxing is a relic, haven given way to MMA and other martial contests. I know the damage it does, but the elegance of a good boxing match is still attractive.

Wow!
ReplyDeleteGreat assortment spanning almost all genres.
However, you left out the Superman cover that probably inspired the Superman/Ali story...Superman #164 featuring Lex beating the snot out of a powerless (due to a red sun) Kal-El!
I have that one collected but didn't put it in because of having too many DC covers already (I thought). I might add it.

ReplyDeleteGreat stuff. Some of them are begging to be made into banners for the GSBAMB
I thought about it, but I have other things coming don't worry. I look forward to the banner magic you can whip up.
