Above is an alternate cover for the most recent issue of
Popeye Classics which is the only ongoing comic series I still regularly pick up. I don't however pop (tee hee) for these variant covers, preferring to get the all-vintage versions for my personal reading pleasure.
But they are fun variations. Below are more of these often exceedingly weird takes on Elzie Segar's invention.
And this gives me a chance to feature once again arguably the most unsettling interpretation of the famous Sailor Man I've ever chance across.
That's not pleasant.

Love that Steve Mannion cover!
ReplyDeleteMe too, that or the Pedro Vargas one.

Have to second "Garetts" comments that is an amazing cover by Steve Mannion - plus it's good to see Jim Engel art again, I haven't seen him in comics in many a year.
ReplyDeleteJim Engel is a name I well remember from many a comic book of yesteryear.

The next to last one is by Sarah Hensley, one of my Facebook friends.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't seen the Jack Mendelsohn one.
Craig asked ME to try and draw one but a few attempts made me wish I had kept up my art studies past 9th grade. Eventually, I gave up and never submitted one. :(
That would've been cool.
