Catch Of The Day!
There's a certain naughty naivete to these vintage gag magazines. There is no denying the Mad Men-era sexism, but there is nonetheless a fundamentally stupid playfulness about the jokes that makes them seem less offensive than they really ought to be.
Maybe it's the fact that despite being reduced to objects most if not all the time, the women in these cartoons always seem ultimately to be in control despite whatever expression of appears on their inevitably surprised faces. It's the men who are actually in danger, in the very moment of their perceived triumph, they are at their weakest, subject to the very thing they imagine in their pride that they have conquered.
Or maybe it's just that men are pigs. That works too.
Rip Off
