Hard Sell!
Of all the Charlton Action heroes to make the migration to DC in the 80's, the most abused would most likely have to be Peacemaker. I confess I have not read his appearances in the comic Checkmate, but his own limited series painted Christopher Smith not as a man dedicated to bringing about ultimate world peace by using applied force against those who threatened that peace. This was seen somehow as absurd by the folks at DC, so he was painted often as a madman. The cover above seems to pick up on that theme.
It is a striking image, that I will allow. Here's a glimpse at the artwork by Steve Erwin for the cover, minus the fourth-wall breaking threat. I wonder if DC noticed any uptick in sales on this cover.

Ugh... such pointless desecration. They did a pretty bad Thunderbolt, too. So glad the estate of PAM has the rights, just wish they would put out a collection of the classic material. Same for Peacemaker.
ReplyDeleteI liked Thunderbolt better, but I agree it's best that PAM's heirs have control. I'm with you on a collection of the classic stuff. I don't see what the hold up is on that. The Judomaster material in particular has always seemed so modern to me that much of it would pass even in today's market.

Never cared much for the character in any incarnation. For that matter, after 59 years as a fan, I have pretty much stopped reading DC.Flushpoint
ReplyDeleteI haven't been reading quite that long, but I agree with your general sentiment. New comics blow by and large.

When DC dumped history and continuity, they created a universe that I no longer wish to visit. Many of the characters are unrecognizable. First time in my reading experience that there are Green Arrow and Hawkman features running and I'm reading neither
ReplyDeleteI feel that way about the Avengers, a book I followed religiously for over forty years before finally throwing in the towel and calling it quits. Sometimes it just gets too tiring to care about the latest variation on a theme.
DeleteDC is a very confusing place to visit if you have much of memory, that's for sure. Like visiting a city after many years and finding they've changed all the streets around.

It seems todays comics have no rules on the timeline and universe shame really give me an old fashioned Spidey story, Doc Strange, The old Avengers, F.F., Thor hence the Silver Age of comics and in a lot of ways superior to the Golden Age
