David Finch is one of the modern powerhouse comic artists. I've been impressed by his work here and there, but since I rarely get new comics I've not been a follower necessarily.
But when I saw this artwork for a cover of Top Cow's Witchblade from 1999 co-starring The Darkness, I recognized immediately the influences of the late great Frank Frazetta.
The figure of The Darkness seems a clear homage to this Frazetta figure.
the classic image which once served as a cover for Thongor Against the Gods.
And the Witchblade character seems very much modeled after the dame in this most famous Frazetta painting.
The painting of course was used as the cover for Lancer's Conan the Adventurer.
Frazetta's influence on modern comics art remains powerful indeed.

Looks about right: always nice to see homages to Fritz, even if it's unconscious on Finch's part.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that Frazetta's influence has gotten into Finch's DNA, but I'd suspect he knows that he's paying his respects in this image. I'm amazed since I started noticing how many folks though have made use of that damsel.
