Jeff Jones was one of the key artists who defined the whole concept of fantasy for me in the 70's when I first began to uncover the genre more thoroughly. A fantasy novel looked like a Jeff Jones book. Jones clearly evoked the Frazetta feel, but often gave the whole shebang a deeper quality of contradiction and mystery. The works are more elusive and consequently very memorable.
It was Jones who painted some compelling and bizarre images for the covers of Fritz Leiber's compelling and bizarre tales of Nehwon and the two boon companions Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser. It was under these classic Jones ACE book covers I first unwrapped those tales in their original forms.
