The Coming Of Aqua Buddha!
It's going to be interesting to say the least, to be a Kentuckian represented by Senator-Elect Rand Paul. His Libertarian notions are throwbacks to a time when all men were created equal in the eyes of the Almighty perhaps, but man's law made some very unsettling distinctions.
The celebration of private property among the crowd that Paul belongs to is their real religion, and just enough "demon" government to allow the haves to keep what they've accumulated (or inherited) is all that is thought necessary in this world of ours. The purity of that belief system is not in question, but purity and attendant enthusiasm are not virtues in and of themselves, if they are chained to ideas that lack charity.
The infamous "Aqua Buddha" ad was in retrospect a strategic mistake for Jack Conway's campaign, and I don't personally approve of it, thought I don't think it qualifies as a religious test either. It's about past acts and about judgment, and as such is allowable in a campaign. Reaching back to college to gather such nonsense is suspect, but when you have a novice "public servant" with no track record, it's what is there.
With Mitch McConnell as leader of the opposition in the Senate and Rand Paul as the firebrand rookie Senator and apparent key vote on many issues, Kentucky has some significant clout to shape the future of legislation. The shape of those things that are coming is what I dread alas.
Oh and here's that classic comic book cover with its original colors.
Rip Off
