The release of the King Kong remake in 1976 gave the guys in charge of the Toho movies starring that other giant movie star the idea to release a 1973 movie, but with covers evoking Kong's battle atop the then brand spanking new twin towers.
Any images of the Trade Towers today create mixed feelings, but then they were the very symbol of progress, the very notion that made them a target of reactionary zealots.
But Godzilla didn't want to make a political statement, he just wanted to smack Megalon in the mush!
