It was supposed to communicate to parents a sense of quality of course to overcome the bad rep comics had. I got over that bias against painted covers though soon enough when Charlton started using them. It occurs to me that, as Marvel and DC have abandoned the type of covers they did back in the day, they should perhaps consider going down the painted cover route.
