The Bogey Man Will Get You!

The Bogey Man was one of those Spirit-inspired characters who only made a few visits to the newsstands. The character was published in 1944 by the Rural Home / Croydon comics outfit. They are likely most famous for their character The Green Turtle who appeared in Blazing Comics

The Bogey appeared first in Red Band Comics #1 and again in #2. It's the same cover and the same stories.

His shadow is showcased on the covers of issues #3 and #4 but there is no Bogeyman story inside either issue.

To read the only Bogey Man comic story of the Golden Age check out this link. It was most likely written by Bruce Elliot and definitely drawn by August Froehlich.

Here's a link to the single text-only story by Bruce Elliot entitled "Passing the Buck".

The story was reprinted a few times. First in a 1945 issue of Great Comics featuring an attractive but unconnected L.B. Cole cover.

And then again in 2023 by Thrilling Nostalgia in the zero issue of Lost Tales of the Golden Age. That's a nice Max Texeira cover.

Some possibly new or perhaps unpublished Bogey Man stories were collected for the third issue under this handsome Bob Almond cover.

  1. I have never heard of this character before, by I am surprised they even got as far as publishing it with such an obvious swipe of the Spirits "costume" I can't imagine a company today coming up with a character with an almost identical costume to Batman and not being sued lol. . I will read the tale later today .

    1. Perhaps it was overlooked or maybe a blue suit is just too generic to effectively trademark.

  2. I forgot to mention in yesterday's comment that I've never heard of the film The Legend Of Hillbilly John, more's the pity because it sounds like a fun watch.
