The Month Of Steel!

April is a signature month for Superman and comic books in general as Action Comics #1000 hits the stands in Superman's eightieth year on this planet. DC is making a proper spectacle of it, offering the comic/book in a number of variations and formats. Chances are decent I'll sample at least one of them. That comic books still exist is remarkable in itself, as the system which distributed them has all but disappeared and the very existence of paper magazines is threatened in a world increasingly dominated by digital entertainment.

But for my part, I want to spend some quality time with Superman by watching vintage cartoons and films from across a startling span of decades. Expect reviews and comments, especially on weekends, as the month dawdles along and perhaps a gallery or two if the notion strikes.

I've recently picked up the novel Gladiator by Philip Wylie, the book which by some reports inspired both Doc Savage, the Man of Bronze and Superman, the Man of Steel. Of course not all items here will revolve around the Man of Tomorrow, but expect many if not most to do so. So it's the Son of Krypton this month here at the Dojo! As the hero himself would say -- Up Up and Away!  No Foolin'!

  1. I just watched the pilot for Krypton. Looks like it could be a good series

  2. I'm glad to see that first PSA presented here. I've been tucking some of those into a folder - it seems they could use some exposure these days.
Can't say i have any enthusiasm for Krypton - Syfy has done a fine job of conditioning me to ignore their offerings.
But Gladiator was a book i much enjoyed. Sadly, my copy was eaten by mice. Seriously - only thing they touched, so i guess they liked it, too. You're probably familiar with Roy Thomas using Gladiator for his introduction of Iron Munro in the Young All-Stars, yes? It wasn't until quite recently that i found Iron Munro was a separate pre-existing character, not just extrapolated from Hugo Danner.

Damn. Now i want a new copy of the book to go back and read it again...

    1. I thought I had read it once before, but I think I only have read the Marvel adaptation. The Iron Munro stuff I didn't know about until much later, since I was off DC at the time.
