Conquest Of The Comics Of The Apes!

The apes are abundant. So much so that I have enough covers collected for another month of Ape action. Expect it sometime early next year. For now enjoy this month's full-blooded collection of Apes.

  1. I'd completely forgotten about Magilla Gorilla, I haven't seen that cartoon since the '70s !! That Conan adaptation of 'Rogues In The House' was in the first Conan Treasury Edition which came out in 1975 but I bought my copy in 1977 while on holiday - it was still on sale two years after first coming out !! The Planet of the Apes cover was also the cover of Marvel UK's POTA weekly #35 from June 1975 - Marvel UK trailed the "Beneath" adaptation for weeks beforehand and I was insanely excited about it perhaps more than for any other comic before or since. By coincidence at around the same time a double-bill of "Beneath" and "Battle" opened at my local cinema. Marvel's version of the mutants in "Beneath" (as drawn by Alfredo Alcala) look a lot more hideous than the actual movie versions.

    1. Love that Conan story. It's a stunner and was lucky enough to land during that single month Marvel did double-size stories for most all their books. I agree about the Alcala art, it is creepier than the movie.

    1. Yes indeed. Glad you mentioned it. Glad to see a top-notch Webb Wilder fan commenting here at the Dojo.

  3. I believe that Weird Wonders Tales issue, featuring Dr. Nagan on the cover just before he would get his head transplanted onto a gorilla's body and change his his hair color to black (or was he wearing a blonde wig for the cover scene) included other very early Marvel stories that would inspire Steve Gerber to create the Headsmen to bedevil the Defenders during his remarkable run on that title.
