Black Friday!

It's absolutely wonderful that they've set aside a day on which we can reflect on the rich and vibrant contributions given to pop culture and to the broader society by African-Americans. It's a gracious and uplifting opportunity to explore the cultural impact of Black society on the broader American tapestry. It's...

What?

"Black Friday" is not a day to celebrate African-American citizens?!?

"Black Friday" is an every increasingly raucous and uncouth orgy of capitalism run amok as countless hordes of people stampede into stores in the dead of night to buy things they don't need for people they hardly like with money they don't yet have, and doing so in stores and shops which have fecklessly banked all their dreams of solvency on a few weeks of consumer madness in hopes, often in vain, of reaching a meager balanced ledger by the end of the annum.

Oh.

Never mind.

  1. You forgot to mention the loving, caring CEO's who so wisely decided to intimidate so many of their workers to come in on Thanksgiving instead of spending the day with their loved ones, with far too little security to keep the idiots who arrive to shop on their best behavior.

All this so they can justify keeping wages down. Bah!

All that said, great post, Rip! :)

    1. I think what finally flipped me on this was the absolute focus on Black Friday over Thanksgiving itself, as if the holiday merely serves as a starting gate for the sales season. Actually it seems Black Friday is already losing some of its steam as the sales are coming sooner and lasting longer. The focus on one day is diminishing, but I don't think that's good news necessarily for taking a breather on Thanksgiving. I like stuff to be open too, but I also appreciate a day or two in the year when convenience must take a back seat. It makes you appreciate it, actually be thankful. Imagine that.

  2. Well, if you add a positive spin to it, maybe some of those glazed-over shoppers might be rushing out to buy comic books.

(No, I can't swallow that, either. I was just grasping at straws.)

    1. There is that. And I know lots of folks really do enjoy it. But still and all, we could all stand to take a moment to breathe and share a national moment, one apart from our consumer natures.

  3. Hey Rip, you forgot my favourite Italian fumetti, Super Black

  4. Yeah, I bought issues 3 and 5 of Super black in Rome. It almost like a spagetti blackexploit comic. the main character is kinda shaft/kung fu jones. he shoots people, does silly looking kung fu, and shags lots of white chicks and generally acts like a real bad-arse jerk. But its is 70s fumetti so the violence and sex are pretty tame (little blood and no hard-core, thankfully). hillariously, his name is "super black", he signs a cheque that way.

    1. The covers are very cool indeed. Sleek and Steranko-esque.
