Russ Manning Tarzan Archives!

This volume due out in December of this year looks to be a very handsome volume. The Russ Manning Tarzan was a sleek and modern hero, with smooth tanned skin and slick black hair, he was ideally handsome, an ideal hero. It was this version which I was accustomed to in comics which made Joe Kubert's later rough and tumble version so dramatic and so different.

The volume is scheduled to contain all the issues below, ones which adapt the original Edgar Rice Burroughs stories. Contrary to the solicitation though, the tales adapted include The Return of Tarzan, The Beasts of Tarzan, and The Son of Tarzan in addition to Tarzan of the Apes, Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar, and Tarzan the Untamed.

Gold Key's adaptations of the first four ERB books were one comic in length, highly efficient and I must say highly effective renditions of the classic tales by Gaylord Dubois and Manning. Later they took more time to develop the tales.

Here are the comics included, under some very nice looking George Wilson covers.

These comics were collected by Dark Horse once before, in the 90's in very handsome paperbacks featuring some lush Mark Schultz cover artwork. I already own these, so whether I get the hardback later in the year is questionable at this time.

  1. I already have those 90s, digest-sized reprints, so unless I get the hardcover as a gift....

  2. I'm about the same on that. Dark Horse can be a bit hit and miss on the quality of the reprints, but I'd suspect these are going to be as clean as the ones used in the old volumes. As I recollect the coloring was changed in those, more somber.
